A Business Owner's Perspective on The Limitations of ChatGPT

Published: March 7, 2023

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm since it was launched in November 2022. It has become a prime example of what is yet to come in the world of AI-generated content. The possibilities for ChatGPT’s uses abound. However, there are some limitations and challenges in its current state that impact its performance and accuracy. As a business owner, this makes utilizing ChatGPT frustrating and inefficient.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot created by OpenAI. It was primarily designed for customer service use, though it can be (and has been) used for other purposes such as answering questions, generating text, and even giving recommendations. ChatGPT uses NLP, or Natural Language Processing, to process and analyze natural human language data in order to communicate.

How is ChatGPT limited?

There are various constraints to ChatGPT, including some that are recognized when starting a new chat with the chatbot. These limitations range from its lack of access to the internet to occasionally producing harmful instructions or biased content. While they can be frustrating, keep in mind that these shortcomings don’t necessarily define ChatGPT’s capabilities. It is still under development and will take some time to work out all the defects.

No Internet Access

Any real-time information is currently unattainable by ChatGPT, as it does not have access to the internet. It’s not like Google where you can ask the results of your favorite sports team’s game. It only has access to the information from the data it has been fed. Though it is still in its early stages of development, it would be nice to see an expansion of ChatGPT’s knowledge database via enabling its access to the internet in the future.

Poor Memory

While ChatGPT can now remember what a user has said earlier in a conversation, there is a limit to how much information it can retain. Currently, ChatGPT can only reference 4000 tokens (or about 3000 words) from the current conversation. It cannot reference information from previous conversations. This can make it difficult when asking ChatGPT to analyze or produce long-form content, as it vastly limits both input and output capabilities.

Outdated or Insufficient Information

Though ChatGPT has access to a large amount of information, it’s still lagging behind on current information. This is due in part to ChatGPT not being connected to the internet. It has limited knowledge of events that have occurred after 2021, as that is the most recent data it has been fed. This also means that ChatGPT may struggle or be completely unable to answer questions about very specific or niche topics.

Potential Bias

As previously mentioned, ChatGPT has been trained on a large collection of text data. This data can contain certain biases that influence the responses you receive on various topics. This makes ChatGPT appear as if it has biases and prejudices towards certain groups of people. We’ve also noticed there are particular biases in ChatGPT’s web-based generator that don’t appear in the API. This issue has been acknowledged and OpenAI is currently working to diversify the references being fed to ChatGPT.

OpenAI is already developing another version of ChatGPT due to be released sometime this year. Hopefully it’s one that manages to break through some of these barriers. By understanding the limits of ChatGPT, we can further understand potential challenges of using AI-generated content that may crop up as it becomes more advanced and widely utilized. ChatGPT is an incredible advancement in chatbots, but it definitely still has a lot of room to grow.

3 Ways You Can Use ChatGPT in Your Business Right Now

Despite its limitations, ChatGPT can still be useful to your business as it is right now. These are just a few suggestions, but if you’re interested in implementing the use of ChatGPT in your regular business practice, make sure to do some more research on its further uses.

Create Copy for Marketing Assets

ChatGPT is great for generating copy for marketing collateral! It can be used to write emails, blog posts, captions for social media, ad copy, and so much more. While it was not used to generate this blog, it is certainly a helpful tool when you get a bad case of writer’s block or just simply want to save some time.

Write Code

Writing code can be a long and tedious process. ChatGPT can help simplify that process! It can help write, debug, and even explain code scripts. ChatGPT can work with Javascript, Arduino, HTML, CSS, C++, Python, and other open-source coding languages.

Generate Interview Questions

Struggling to come up with interview questions for various job applicants? Use ChatGPT to help get some ideas flowing. You can request interview questions by the roles you’re interviewing for and even ask that they be specific to the sector you work in. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to “Create a list of 10 questions for an interview with a Sales Representative working at an IT company” and it will generate position-specific and industry-specific questions across a range of dimensions. You can also request a particular kind of question, either skills-based or situational judgement.
